ASCA/EMR Recognized Massage – What You Should Know
If you're looking for a massage not just for relaxation but also for preventive health care or specific complaints, then an ASCA- or EMR-recognized massage is the right choice. But what exactly does that mean – and what should you know in advance?
What Is EMR / ASCA?
-
EMR (Experience Medicine Register) and
-
ASCA (Swiss Foundation for Complementary Medicine)
…are quality registers in Switzerland that evaluate and certify therapists in the field of complementary and alternative medicine.
To be certified, therapists must complete recognized training programs, engage in regular continuing education, and adhere to high professional and ethical standards.

What Is an ASCA/EMR-Recognized Massage?
A recognized massage is more than just wellness. It is a targeted, therapeutic treatment tailored to physical complaints and individual needs. This includes:
✔️ A case history (short intake session)
✔️ A professionally founded massage treatment
✔️ A documented session according to quality standards
Is the Massage Covered by Health Insurance?
Yes – but only through supplemental insurance.
The basic insurance (KVG) does not cover massage therapy costs.
Whether and to what extent the costs are covered depends on your insurance policy. Coverage varies depending on:
-
Health insurance provider
-
Supplemental insurance model
-
Recognized treatment method
-
Therapist (name & ZSR number)
Tip: Contact your supplemental insurance provider directly to check whether the treatment and your therapist are recognized.

Important Information for You as a Client
-
Therapeutic massage is usually more expensive than wellness massage, as it includes case history, documentation, and administrative tasks.
-
If reimbursement is denied after treatment, the price cannot be retroactively reduced.
-
If your insurance does not cover the costs, you’ll still enjoy a professional massage – at a fair wellness rate.
